WHY CUCU?

The Cucu foundation was officially founded in 2006 by the three van Charldorp sisters. In Indonesian, Cucu means grandchild. Grandchildren are the new generation, new hope, a symbol for the future.

The idea to set up a foundation came about during one of the family holidays. The three sisters visited Kenya for the first time in 2003. During a second, very impressive visit to Kenya in 2005, the sisters visited a family with 5 children, a sick mother and an unemployed father. They were living in a temporary shack, 3x2 metres big, on the garbage dump. Our youngest sister spontaneously took off her shoes and gave them to the barefooted mother. She didn’t need them, she said, but the family did.

It was a beautiful gesture, a moment of truth. In the Netherlands, where we come from, we assume that we will always walk around in shoes, have a roof over our head, can go to school and eat and drink enough to fill our stomachs. Unfortunately this is not always the case in the rest of the world.

WHAT DOES CUCU DO?

The Cucu foundation searches for and sponsors projects solely in third world countries, which aim to improve the lives of children. Cucu attempts to work together with local initiative takers as much as possible. During personal holidays and visits, the Cucu board members try to visit the projects themselves, at their own expense. The Cucu foundation is registered at the ‘Kamer van Koophandel’ in Lisse, The Netherlands and it is completely run by volunteers. All projects are financially accounted for. The Cucu board members make sure that 100% of the donations are being used to improve the futures of needy children.
